Music Production
Tuesdays 7:00-8:30pm In-person Location: Painting Studio - 2430 W. 6th St. LA CA. 90057 (Instructor: Matías Anaya) Students learn how to navigate a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). The class covers the basics of musical arrangement, rhythm, harmonies, sampling, audio processing, and mixing. Every week, students receive a prompt to create a beat using the techniques learned in class. By the end of the semester, every student will have completed at least one full length 3 mins track. Landscape Painting
Tuesdays 11:00-2:00pm In-person / Outdoors Location: Meet in Painting Studio - 2430 W. 6th St. LA CA. 90057 (Instructor: Frank Ryan) This is an outdoor painting course designed to broaden an understanding and appreciation of landscape through an investigation of space, light and atmosphere. Students hone observational drawing and painting skills as they respond to their perceptions of the historic urban center of MacArthur Park, applying a variety of conventional and experimental approaches to landscape painting with an emphasis on personal expression. Collaborative Painting
Wednesdays 2:30-4:00pm In-person Location: Painting Studio - 2430 W. 6th St. LA CA. 90057 (Instructor: Fabián Cereijido) In this course students generate a series of collaborative"murals" on 8 foot by 36 inch muslin. The technique--chalk pastels on a wet canvas primed with paint and glue--is similar to fresco painting. In our initial meeting, we brainstorm themes and topics for the paintings. Students practice creating a work of art in an improvisational and active way, alternating activity with reflection, and belonging to a "community of learners" where we are encouraged to teach one another techniques and ideas. Art History Wednesdays 6:45-8:30pm In-person Location: Art Division Library - 2418 W. 6th St. LA CA. 90057 (Instructor: Fabián Cereijido) Weekly conversations about art history engage with artists and artworks that have challenged and subverted the status quo. The conversations also involve the artworks of the students attending the class and the intersection of art and the struggle against eurocentrism and heteronormativity. Students develop their critical thinking, observational skills and ability to relate their own artwork to groundbreaking art from the past and today. Long stretches of the class are dedicated to the experience and enjoyment of artworks. Gallery and Museum Studies
Thursdays 4:30-5:30pm In-person Location: Art Division Gallery - 2432 W. 6th St. LA CA. 90057 (Instructor: Catherine Hess) Current issues in the art world are discussed based on weekly readings of articles and interviews. Analysis of how art is displayed in public settings, who owns cultural property, and how the art market functions are examples of topics to be explored. Careers and activities within museums and galleries may be examined, as well as how to properly display works of art. Bookbinding
Thursdays 4:00-6:30pm Please note this course will run for six weeks only (Feb 10 - Mar. 17) In-person Location: Art Division Library - 2418 W. 6th St. LA CA. 90057 (Instructor: Joel Freeman) This six-week bookbinding course offers instruction in how to create a multi-signature (read: thick), clothbound, hardcover book -- like something you might see in a bookstore or library. Alongside this hands-on workshop, we discuss ways in which books and the places that house them organize information and how a book might be made to question, challenge, or play with such standards. Students end the six weeks with a finished blank book and the material and conceptual tools to pursue their own book projects. |
Intro to Film Arts
Thursdays 5:30-7:00pm In-person Location: Painting Studio - 2430 W. 6th St. LA CA. 90057 (Instructor: Joe Petricca) This introductory workshop gives participants an opportunity to learn the basics of filmmaking through a focus on storytelling, camera production, editing and delivery of a 3 to 5 minute short film, and will culminate in a community screening hosted at Art Division’s community space in the Rampart District of Los Angeles. Students explore drawing as a way to understand, express and discover form and content Basic Photography
Fridays 5:00-7:00pm In-person Location: Painting Studio - 2430 W. 6th St. LA CA. 90057 (Instructor: Leopoldo Peña) In this class, students explore how to develop black and white film. We learn the basics of black and white film exposure and development so students can develop b/w film at home. We work on Twice, a series of double exposures in around our immediate environment. Students share and expose the same rolls of film. The resulting double exposures showcase incidental overlaps and contextual coincidences of students' daily life experiences. At the end of the course, students have a clear understanding of how to develop b/w film at home. Painting and Color
Saturdays 12:00-2:00pm In-person Location: Painting Studio - 2430 W. 6th St. LA CA. 90057 (Instructor: Rebecca Levinson) Focusing on color theory and the materiality of paint, students learn foundational painting concepts while also developing their personal voices. Our lessons offer open-ended frameworks for exploring imagery and process, working from life, photographs, historical artworks and imagination. Students complete the class with a portfolio-ready artwork and an ability to talk about their ideas and influences. In this course students use water-based media such as watercolor, gouache and acrylic. Printmaking
