Writing the Short Film
Learn how to turn your ideas into screenplays. The idea is write a short script that you can shoot in Film Class at Art Division in the Spring. Spend time in class writing with guidance. No experience needed - just an interest in how to get your ideas on the page. Reading from professional screenplays and Screenings of film scenes will be part of class.
Film History
Learn film history. Talk about film. Critique film. Learn the language and references of over 100 years of filmmaking. Watch scenes from great films, watch short films, read articles about film. Learn how one film influenced another.
Fundamental Drawing (Max 10 Students)
Wednesdays - 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

​This course introduces the fundamental principles of observational drawing through the study of value, light, form, and composition. Students will develop their ability to see and translate three-dimensional objects into two-dimensional images through structured exercises in value studies, light analysis, and still-life drawing. Beginning with controlled value exercises, students will learn how light, shadow, and local color influence perception before applying these concepts to increasingly complex observational drawings. Through both sustained studies and timed sketches, students will build confidence in measuring, simplifying, and organizing visual information while developing a deeper understanding of how we see and represent the world around us.
Acting for the Camera (Max 12 Students)
Wednesdays - 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm

A chance to relax and get out of your head in a safe space to gain confidence with others. Participate in acting games and exercises and monologue and scene work. Learn specifics of acting for the camera. A great way to meet and work with other Art Division students, have some fun and learn something. Participation in the class is essential.
Art History (Max 10 Students)
Wednesdays - 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Instructor: Fabián Cereijido
Location: Art Division Library
Each class will engage the artwork of one of the students (we will meet via zoom the previous week), and an art historical theme or artist.

Through participatory dialogues guided by the students responses to artworks, we will engage past and present art production. We will take the time to really experience the work of the students and the works of different artists from the past and the present.
​
The selection of content has privileged artists associated with revolutions and emancipatory struggles.
Camera Basics & b/w Film Development (Max 10 Students)
Thursdays - 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm

This class introduces students to essential photography concepts. Students will learn basic composition, functions of the SLR camera, and black and white film development. We will work collaboratively to produce double-exposed images for the student showcase at the end of the semester.
Painting (Max 12 Students)

Beginning and Intermediate Painting
Beginning Painting

This course will emphasize the development of fundamental painting skills and concepts. Through a combination of in-class projects and instructive demonstrations, students will strengthen formal painting skills while exploring functions of color theory, application of paint and exploration of ideas that shape the tradition today. Class time will focus on thematic painting projects that will be supplemented with short lectures on historical and contemporary practices as well as technical demonstrations.
​Intermediate Painting (must have taken a beginning painting class at AD, a college, or university)

This is course emphasizes conceptual skills and reinforcement of perceptual painting skills through guided projects exploring several painting approaches. The course is designed to push further fundamental skills and impose the student’s personal ideas to their projects. The projects will be supplemented with demonstrations of paint mixing, compositional concepts, and historic ideas. Some written exercises will be linked to the research of projects that will introduce an additional medium to articulate ideas. A formal group critique will be held when each assignment is completed.
*Both classes will meet in the same studio and work along with each other.
Printmaking 1 (Max 10 Students)
Saturdays - 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Location: Printmaking Studio
This class serves as an introduction to relief printing. Students will learn how to create their own set of prints by designing, carving, and printing a linoleum block. Each student will create a monoprint edition of prints.
