ALEXANDRA M GONZALEZ BOTÓN (b.1996)
Un Retrato (A Portrait)

2020
72 x 48 in.
189.9 x 122 cm
oil on canvas with embroidery

óleo sobre lienza bordado
This stunning image is a self-portrait of the artist wearing traditional Mayan dress. She captured her features by looking in a mirror after a long day at work. Although she is tired, her gaze is direct and proud. It strongly engages the viewer, though the subject also appears lost in her own thoughts. She wears a huipil, the loose fitting garment worn by indigenous women, which often is decorated with imagery that tells specific stories. In this case, the artist uses the ornamentation, including Mayan glyphs, to tell of the journey she and her mother made from Guatemala to the U.S.
