While Art Division is a small nonprofit, our intensive engagement with young artists produces extraordinary results. Our students are struggling to start their professional lives with limited resources and experience. They are aspiring artists that have revealed true aptitude in the visual arts but received little or no formal art training in high school. They have “aged out” of most youth arts programs that may previously have met their needs and do not have the resources for continuing education in the arts. Art Division steps in to help them continue their arts training, support their larger educational goals, and establish a career.
The true power of the Art Division program model can be seen in the lives we have changed. Emmanuel G., one of our earliest participants, attends the art program at UCLA and will graduate in 2019. He has also had two solo exhibitions at a major gallery in Los Angeles. Many others are following similar paths. Dillan G. received tutoring to complete his GED. In addition to taking arts classes at Art Division, he earned his degree at UC Riverside, and graduated in 2017. Yuya T., who honed his skills in photography at Art Division, graduated from Art Center College of Design. Athena Q. came to Art Division seeking assistance in transferring to a four year university, she is currently at UCLA studying art. Other success stories include Jessica C. and Robert O. who both work as an artists’ assistants while continuing to pursue their own creative ambitions. We are also proud of Maria G. who successfully transferred from SMC and recently graduated from UC Berkeley. Art Division is committed to a holistic approach to our mission, working deeply with young artists in a comprehensive manner to ensure the most significant results. We choose to work with a limited number of participants often over many years. Only by nurturing the whole individual can we provide each participant with the best chance of succeeding in their chosen career. Art Division seeks to establish a dedicated corps of students, instructors, artists, donors, and community members united with a common goal: to nurture a creative community in the heart of the MacArthur Park neighborhood. |
