Music Production 
Tuesdays  5:30-8:30pm

Students will learn how to navigate a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). The class will cover the basics of musical arrangement, rhythm, harmonies, sampling, audio processing, and mixing. Every week, students receive a prompt to create a beat using the techniques learned in class. By the end of the semester, every student will have completed at least one full length 3 mins track.

Bookbinding (Max: 10 Students)

The course will offer an overview in a variety of book structures and binding techniques, culminating in students producing their own unique artist's books. In the course's final weeks, students will spend increasing time working on and work-shopping their final book projects, which will explore the book as an intersection of content and form. They will present their projects at the end of the semester.

Collaborative Painting

In this class, we will collaborate on group paintings using chalk pastels on a wet canvas primed with paint and glue, which is similar to fresco painting. We will practice creating a work of art in an improvisational and active way—alternating activity with reflection—and sharing techniques and ideas with each other.

Adobe Photoshop (Max: 5 students)
Wednesdays 5:00-7:00pm

Students will learn the basic tools and techniques of Adobe Photoshop with a focus on photographic editing. The topics introduced include creating a document, importing and exporting images, color editing, image editing, basic image manipulation, negative scanning, and other essential Photoshop tasks. Students will create a sixteen-page zine as a final project.

Art History

Through weekly conversations about art and art history, students will share their own creative process and learn to analyze artwork. We will discuss such topics as racism, portraiture, and the depiction of dreams in art against an historical context.​

Intro to Film Arts

This workshop gives participants an overview of short film history and an opportunity to learn the basic concepts of filmmaking. Three short film assignments allow emerging filmmakers to practice their craft making 3 to 5-minute short films. Their films are celebrated with screening of work at Art Division's Student Showcase. 
Attendance at all classes and filmmaking work outside of class is required (up to 3 excused absences allowed.

Drawing

This drawing course offers an introduction to drawing as a process. The course will focus on expanding one’s knowledge and skills of the possibilities inherent in the drawing medium, while exploring various techniques, materials and approaches necessary for practicing drawing from observation. Students explore drawing as a way to understand, express and discover form and content.

Sign Painting

The course will cover the fundamentals of lettering. You will get familiar with the foundation of what makes a letter, different terminology used in lettering and the importance of brush strokes using only black tempera paint and a red sable brush.

Adobe Illustrator Basics (Max: 5 students)

Students will learn the basic tools and techniques of Adobe Illustrator as well as some basic visual design tips. The topics that will be introduced include creating a document, using the pen tool to create shapes, text layout, and other essential Illustrator tasks. Students will create a poster as a final project.

Drawing With the Brush

Prerequisites: Experience in oil painting and figure drawing is strongly recommended. 
This course is designed to support and develop a practical method for those with a passion for representational oil painting. The course begins with study of drapery and plaster casts and progresses towards a fully realized figure painting. Through extensive study of light, students will develop observational painting skills including working from the live model. Learning objectives include: creating a dynamic composition and tonal plan, mass drawing, modeling of form, color mixing, palette maintenance, paint handling, gestural simplification, glazing, edges and more.

Printmaking (Max: 10 Students)

This class introduces students to the basic techniques of printmaking and explores a range of printmaking methods including rubber block, linocut, mezzotint and etching. Occasionally the class includes special workshops offered by master printmakers such as Roger Herman and Fernando Sandoval.  At the end of the semester, students are expected to have completed two editions of prints.

Introduction to Abstraction Thought

In this painting class, students will learn the foundations of painting through practices on still-life observation, color theory, and understanding the materiality of paint. The class will address formal considerations and concepts in the artworks, in which students can develop their statement on art. Additionally, by working from life and having built the formal groundwork students can start to explore the visual language of abstraction and non-representational imagery to deepen their understanding of painting.

Photography

In our photography classes, we cover the  functions of the SLR Camera, b/w film development and how to make portraits with natural light. Students are encouraged to use available resources and take photos of their immediate context. In each course, students gain a practical understanding of the basic principles of photography and develop the skills necessary to produce high quality images.

College + Career Counseling

This individualized workshop helps students transition from two to four year colleges by assisting with goal-setting practices and the college application process, as well as career counseling with resume writing, professional etiquette and paid work in the arts.

Field Trips
Art Division faculty and local arts professionals lead monthly field trips to artists’ studios and local museum and gallery exhibitions.

Art Division requires that all students show proof of COVID vaccination in order to attend class.
