This work resulted from the collaboration of five artists, hence the “5” that appears twice on the canvas. The disturbing surrealist imagery is dreamlike.  A few elements, however, suggest a more specific subject matter. The skull and jelly-roll cake in the center refer to Mexican culture. A train traverses the landscape in the lower right toward a desert and river. A man insistently points at a figure struggling under a spherical form inscribed with the words “con sudor” (“with sweat”). Might the train be that which transports immigrants from Mexico to the United States, where work at the behest of others is so hard it verges on the overwhelming?

Esta obra es el resultado de la colaboración de cinco artistas, de ahí el “5” que aparece dos veces en el lienzo. La inquietante imaginería surrealista es onírica. Sin embargo, algunos elementos sugieren un tema más específico. El cráneo y el pan dulce en el centro se refieren a la cultura mexicana. Un tren atraviesa el paisaje en la parte inferior derecha hacia un desierto y un río. Un hombre señala insistentemente una figura que lucha bajo una forma esférica inscrita con las palabras “con sudor.”¿Será el tren el que transporta inmigrantes de México a Estados Unidos, donde trabajar a instancias de otros es tan duro que raya en lo abrumador?
