soft pastels and oil pastel on watercolor paper, collection of Cindy Ojeda.
The type of cake in this image, called a niño envuelto (swaddled baby), is a jelly roll commonly found in Mexico and in Mexican pastry shops in Los Angeles.  While the image may evoke memories of childhood or connections to Mexican culture, the artist has rendered the candy-colored sweets as grand 3-dimensional forms, as if they were sculptures or monuments.
