Woodcuts; “La Bestia” (
The Beast) series

Xilografías; serie "La Bestia.”

“La Bestia” refers to a network of Mexican freight trains atop which U.S.-bound migrants ride to traverse Mexico. The trains allow migrants to avoid immigration checkpoints and detention centers but the ride poses grave, even deadly physical risks. This series of prints depicts various individuals riding on the train, each wearing a mask—tiger, devil, skull, jaguar, luchador—that connects that person to an aspect of Mexican culture. The animals depicted are also symbolic of—and often native to—Mexico.
