FERNANDO OLIVERA (1962 - 2018)
Mensajes del Alma (Messages from the Soul)
2006
15 ½ x 16 ½ in.

39.3 x 42 cm

woodcut
xilografía
The culture, people, and politics of his native Oaxaca influenced Olivera’s work. In this intricate print—where staccato cuts in the woodblock create a stippled effect of light and dark that serve to model the forms—an indigenous woman in traditional dress cradles in her arms a mound of flowers or grain in which nestles a human heart, symbolizing the soul. The mysterious roundels ornamenting her skirt may represent masked Zapatista rebels, many of whom were indigenous women.
