CLASSES

Film
Mondays  6:00-8:00pm
(Instructor: Joe Petricca)
Learn filmmaking technique, study short films and make short film projects. At least two structured assignments require students to complete short (under 5 minute) film projects which will improve their filmmaking practice. Some projects will be shot in class, others will require students to work on their own time.

The Book as Medium (Max: 10 Students)
Tuesdays 12:00-2:30pm

A class for any binding skill level. Over the course of the semester, students will work on four short-term and experimental book projects. Instead of focusing on traditional binding techniques, this class proposes the physical structure of the book as the starting place for artist book projects. Our making will be guided by regular readings and class discussion.

Fundamentals of Music Production 
Mondays  5:30-8:30pm

Students will learn how to navigate a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). The class will cover the basics of musical arrangement, rhythm, harmonies, sampling, audio processing, and mixing. Every week, students receive a prompt to create a beat using the techniques learned in class. By the end of the semester, every student will have completed at least one full length 3 mins track.

Adobe Photoshop (Max: 5 Students)
Wednesdays 5:00-7:00pm

Students will learn the basic tools and techniques of Adobe Photoshop with a focus on photographic editing. The topics introduced include creating a document, importing and exporting images, color editing, image editing, basic image manipulation, negative scanning, and other essential Photoshop tasks. Students will create a sixteen-page zine as a final project.

Art History and You
Wednesdays 7:00-8:30pm

Each class will engage the artwork of one of the students (I will meet with them via zoom the previous week), and an art historical theme or artist. Through participatory dialogues guided by the students responses to artworks, we will engage past and present art production. We will take the time to really experience the work of the students and the works of different artists from the past and the present. The selection of content has privileged artists associated with revolutions and emancipatory struggles.

Drawing the Face
Fridays 10:00am-12:00pm

This class will focus on the various stylistic and conceptual approaches to representing the human face. Students will start with how to render proper proportions of the face while also learning how to distribute different values seen on the face to create depth. We will mainly use dry materials such as pens, pencils, and charcoal on paper. The assignments will consist of realistically drawing the face, also into introducing methods of deconstructing or abstracting the face to explore new methods. The emphasis of the class is to develop technical skills in observational skills, understand value (light and shadow), and grasp the use of drawing materials.

Adobe Illustrator Basics (Max: 5 Students)
Fridays  3:00-5:00pm

Students will learn the basic tools and techniques of Adobe Illustrator as well as some basic visual design tips. The topics that will be introduced include creating a document, using the pen tool to create shapes, text layout, and other essential Illustrator tasks. Students will create a poster as a final project.

Painting Fundamentals
Saturdays 11:00-2:00pm

In this class, students of all experience levels will explore foundational painting principles through formal and process-based assignments. With a focus on acrylics, supplemented by drawing and collage, students will explore markmaking, composition, color relationships, value and imagery in painting. Beginning students will gain familiarity with painting processes and terminology, while intermediate and advanced students will be challenged by assignments from life and photography. We'll complete paintings over one- and two-week periods, culminating in a final portfolio piece. Through these assignments, students will gain technical skills while also finding and refining personal voice.

Printmaking I (Max: 10 Students)
Saturdays  10:00-12:00pm

This class serves as an introduction to relief printing. Students will learn how to create their own set of prints by designing, carving, and printing a linoleum block. Each student will create a monoprint edition of prints.

Printmaking II (Max: 10 Students)
Saturdays  12:00-2:00pm
(Instructor: Javier Carrillo)
This class introduces students to the basic techniques of printmaking and explores a range of printmaking methods including rubber block, linocut, mezzotint and etching. Occasionally the class includes special workshops offered by master printmakers such as Roger Herman and Fernando Sandoval.  At the end of the semester, students are expected to have completed two editions of prints.

Abstract Painting
Saturdays  2:30-4:30pm

This class is designed to give students exposure to the methods and materials used in painting by focusing on color and the abstract image. The goal is to introduce essential skills to have a better grasp of the activity of painting. We will use acrylic paint on paper or canvas for our projects and studies. The assignments will be supplemented with examples of historical and contemporary artists’ works.

The emphasis of the class is to develop technical skills in the application of paint, understanding introductory color theory, and composition. The projects offered in class will aid in developing the students’ visual language regarding conceptual and expressive content.

Photography
Saturdays  3:00-5:00pm

In our photography classes, we cover the  functions of the SLR Camera, b/w film development and how to make portraits with natural light. Students are encouraged to use available resources and take photos of their immediate context. In each course, students gain a practical understanding of the basic principles of photography and develop the skills necessary to produce high quality images.
